About Jean Tirole

Jean Tirole is Honorary Chairman of the Jean-Jacques Laffont - Toulouse School of Economics Foundation and Chairman of the Institute for Advanced Study in Toulouse (IAST). He is also affiliated with MIT, where he holds a visiting position, the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, and the Institut de France. Professor Tirole’s research covers industrial organization, regulation, finance, macroeconomics and banking, and psychology-based economics.

 

Professor Tirole’s publications include Inside and Outside Liquidity (with Bengt Holmström) (2011), Balancing the Banks: Global Lessons from the Financial Crisis (with Mathias Dewatripont and Jean-Charles Rochet) (2010), The Theory of Corporate Finance (2006), A Theory of Incentives in Procurement and Regulation (with Jean-Jacques Laffont) (1993), and The Theory of Industrial Organization (1988). He has also been widely published in numerous scholarly publications such as The RAND Journal of Economics, The Quarterly Journal of Economics, The Review of Economic Studies, and The American Economic Review.

 

In addition to his work at the University of Toulouse, Professor Tirole is also a member of the French Strategic Research Council and a member of the Executive Committee for the Institute for Advanced Study in Toulouse (IAST). Before moving to Toulouse in 1991, he was professor of economics at MIT. In 1998, he was president of the Econometric Society, whose executive committee he has served on since 1993, and in 2001 he served as the president of the European Economic Association.

 

In 2014, Professor Tirole was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science for his analysis of market power and regulation. Also in 2014, he was awarded the Erwin Plein Nemmers Prize in Economics and in 2013 he was given the Stephen A. Ross Prize in Financial Economics. He also holds honorary doctorates from Hitotsubashi University, Université de Lausanne, Athens University of Economics and Business, and University of Rome Tor Vergata, and is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal of Society of Edinburgh.
